Didn't drive it much before tune-up, since tune-up was after valve/head rebuild and new carb. When under load climbing a hill at lower RPMs he seems to ping a bit until the RPMS increase. Is this an octane issue? I run 87 and had 87 in it at time of tune. If so, how do I correct? Timing? He also runs a bit rich?

#5854 11/28/2004 10:46 PM | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 266 Custom Title | | Custom Title Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 266 | If it's pinging, you either need to run higher octane fuel, or retard the timing slightly. If you have an adjustable vacuum advance, you could take some of the advance out of it.
When does it run rich? If it's at idle, just turn the idle air screw in a bit. If it's at cruise speed, that is only adjustable by changing the jet in the carb.

Bring it back and have them retard the timing a little. Most of the goodwrench people today do not know how to tune up these old engines.

Those franchise guys only know how to upsell a job, and add on a lot of unnecessary parts and labor. The timing is probably a little early. Retard it a couple of degrees, and see what happens.
