The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Sputtering in 4th

Howdy everybody,
I just took of my muffler as some of you may know,and by the way it sounds great kinda like a V8 but better, just the way i like it! but anyways my question is now since I can hear the pipes I found out it sputters in 4th maybe in third to but I cant hear it.The only time I really notice it is when im going about 50 or 55 mph down the road.
ANY SOLUTIONS?

Is it worse under load? If it gets worse when you accelerate in low or second,or cruising in 3rd or 4th,it might have a plug wire that's going bad or shorting to a ground somewhere.
Might be worth giving it a set of wires and plugs,maybe points and condensor too,or at least check your settings,points gap,timing,etc.

I think its about time for new wires anyways. I have never changed them. I just Got through putting new plugs points condeser oil and filter. I have never really messed with the timing and dont know how but I can always look in the old shop manual.

I had a noticable miss at idle with new plugs. I pulled them and regapped them all. One had a very narrow gap. That solved my problem--too simple.
