I don't know if the HEI cap for a six will fit a 8 cylinder HEI distributor. If it will ...
SOMEWHERE I read a post about modifing an HEI to fit into a 270 L6. The boss that rests on the engine block and limits how far inside the shaft goes into the engine was removed and a ring of some kind was installed to set the depth of the gear, What keeps the HEI shaft centered in the hole? Can a 8 cyl. HEL be used on my 270 L 6?

You may want to contact Langdons. They have an HEI that's already setup for use in the inline 6. Theirs is modified from the 4.3 V6, I beleive.

How would I contact them please?
Also are the V-8 and V-6 HEI's the same only with different caps and innerds? In other words can I adapt an HEI (8Cyl)I have on hand to work on my 270?

A v-8 dist. will not work on a 6 cyl.engine. Langdons stovebolt.com, Tom will help you out with whatever you need. He knows all there is to know about inline 6, give him a call.

I have converted a V-8 distributor housing to work on an inline 6, but it's a very complicated procedure that I wouldn't reccomend unless you're a master machinist. It involves fabricating bushings and cutting the housing to the proper length, and changing the reluctor and pickup assembly out for a 6-cylinder unit, etc. It's also necessary to machine the original locating shoulder off, and fabricating a mounting bracket to position the housing at the right height. Then you need to make a new shaft, and braze a mechanical advance assembly on at the right location. I've been at the auto repair trade for 50+ years, including a lot of round track racing, and adapting a V-8 distributor to a six is a challenge for me.
