If it will ... SOMEWHERE I read a post about modifing an HEI to fit into a 270 L6. The boss that rests on the engine block and limits how far inside the shaft goes into the engine was removed and a ring of some kind was installed to set the depth of the gear, What keeps the HEI shaft centered in the hole? Can a 8 cyl. HEL be used on my 270 L 6?

Also are the V-8 and V-6 HEI's the same only with different caps and innerds? In other words can I adapt an HEI (8Cyl)I have on hand to work on my 270?

It involves fabricating bushings and cutting the housing to the proper length, and changing the reluctor and pickup assembly out for a 6-cylinder unit, etc. It's also necessary to machine the original locating shoulder off, and fabricating a mounting bracket to position the housing at the right height. Then you need to make a new shaft, and braze a mechanical advance assembly on at the right location. I've been at the auto repair trade for 50+ years, including a lot of round track racing, and adapting a V-8 distributor to a six is a challenge for me. Jerry
