I had to remove my fuel tank due to rocks and dirt in it... Drained the old nasty gas out and rinsed it out... In looking inside the tank I noticed it flash rusted in some areas but not in others... What can be done to stop the flash rusting?

I am doing this at home so whatever process it be done needs to be non toxic...

I don't fool with old fuel tanks. Spectra Premium tanks can be bought for around $200. They are made in Canada and fit like originals.

If you are going to use your original tank and it has flash rust in it, it needs to be cleaned and coated. There are high power cleaners specifically for that purpose. A trick I learned a while ago is to put a bunch of washers or nuts into the tank with the cleaner and shake it for a while... that helps get all the rust and gunk to let go. Then rinse it thoroughly. After you get it clean and rust free, you will need to coat the inside with a special sealant. There is a Trucks episode on a '65 c10 project they did that talks about this as well.

I acid dipped my tank, then used POR15 tank restore.

Don't want to hijack the post but has anyone moved the tank location to under the bed. My project has no tank (in fact, no seats, no steering column, no headliner, no carpet, and not much remaining floor) so I'm open to new ideas. I've seen a few applications where they've moved it.
There's a tank I've seen on ebay, curious if anyone has had any experience with them.

Yes lots of people have moved them. A search will turn up hours of reading.

brihill18 American Classic Truck Parts has a after market gas tanks that fits behind rear axle between frame rails... If you were to go this route you will need to know the year your of your frame... American Classic Truck Parts Search page

Hey Ken, you still out there?? Where does one find the "Spectra Premium tanks" that you mentioned earlier in this post????
We got one from Classic Parts of America and the spout's are installed at the wrong angles.

These guys have them. http://www.tanks-to-pans.com/site/823208/page/314684 However, there is a guy that puts them on eBay occasionally for a little less money but I don't see his ad now. I have bought the Spectra tanks for my 1st and 2nd series GMC's and for my 1956 Ford cars. They all fit like the new ones. The 1st and 2nd series fillers on opposite sides of the cab. Maybe they sent you the wrong one. There are some guys from Texas advertising tanks on eBay, but I think they are Asian tanks. The Spectra are made in Canada and lots of stuff for our old GM jalopies was made in Canada in the first place.

Thanks Ken, I learn something new every time I log on to the bolt. Never heard of that outfit before, I'll add them to my list. The tank that I tried to install this weekend was one that my buddy bought in the fall and I don't think he will be able to return it because of the time limit on the purchase, I think its 30days.
I can't believe that more people haven't complained about these tanks because there just isn't any way that you can install it correctly.

For those that have no budget for a new tank and the only problem with your tank is surface rust, put it back in and add 2 or 3 in- line filters to your fuel line. Then when you can afford it or get tired of replacing filters ever year or two buy a new one.

I bought a 15gal aluminum tank from Summit They also have poly for around 100 speedway has them too. Just hung it between the rear frame rails.

Bruce is right, don't throw anything away until you can load it all up in the bed of your newly finished truck and haul it off.
