I would like to change it to an open drive shaft. I heard there are conversion kits for that type of modification, is that so and were would you find one? (I will use a trany that does not use a torque tube set up.) Or is my only option to use a different rear?

I've seen it talked about here before. I believe you would also have to weld your spring mounts so they don't pivot anymore. I'm sure somebody that has done it can give you some more info. Or try doing a search on center section swap or similar terms. | | |

The center bolts in but you need to do something about the pivot on the rear, I welded them up. Another option would be to cut off the pivots and weld on traditional sping perch. There is a kit to weld rears into AD tucks that would work also.
