i was just curious about this tranny, its a 4 spd with a granny low of like 7.05, just wondering what the other 3 gears of the tranny are, and the later sm465 does that have the same gears just different granny?? and does would it bolt up to a chevy 350?

#5798 01/01/2002 12:37 AM | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 5 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 5 | this was like a three speed transmission with an extra "low gear", you drove it like a three speed, pulling out in second gear, fourth gear ratio was 1:1, it is not an overdrive transmission. you only used 1st for creeping or pulling where you needed maximum power. it's similar to the SM465 that came along later. with the right bellhousing it will bolt up to any chevy V8 | | |

no OD, but it is a very strong tranny. I also use it to 4wheel, and that granny gear is great.
unless you want to do a lot of towing, or something where you'd need that extra low gear I'd go with something else (maybe a 700r4 or something like that) | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 | St86, try this link homepage.mac.com/jefe/gear for a page on tranny gear ratios and models. I like both trannies 'cause of floor shift being handy and no linkage to mess with. I use the low for my 54 when hauling gravel uphills and getting started with full load at pit. Good for slow-pulling of other vehicles in yard. Otherwise just a 3spd to drive, less shifting that way!  The 465 is just a later model, may be beefier. It will not fit the 67 or earlier bellhousings as the bearing retainer (holds throw-out bearing) is bigger on it and won't fit center hole on housing. The bolt patterns are the same tho. You can just use a later housing on your engine to get the right hole size. One thing, they are not a "race" trans and won't shift fast if that's what you wanted. :rolleyes:

| | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 5 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 5 | the new tranny of choice is the NV4500, it is a 5 speed with a creeper first gear, and fifth is an overdrive. it is used in some mid 90's pick-up's, one of the few that still have a cast iron case so it will last. the one in my '95 chevy has 158,000 miles on it. | | |
