HELLO EVERYONE. SOMETIME EARLY THIS MORNING, RICK OEFFINGER'S YELLOW 1958 GMC NAPCO SUBURBAN, ALONG WITH THE LATE MODEL GMC 2500 PICKUP AND TRAILER IT WAS SITTING ON, WERE STOLEN FROM IN FRONT OF OMAR LUGO'S PARENTS HOUSE IN DOWNEY, CA.

THE SUBURBAN IS NEARLY COMPLETELY RESTORED. IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA AND HAVE ANY INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE DOWNEY POLICE DEPARTMENT, OR RICK OEFFINGER AT 310-901-6613.

IF YOU SEE NEWLY RESTORED PARTS FOR A GMC, 1/2 TON NAPCO, OR NEWLY PAINTED YELLOW SHEETMETAL FOR SALE IN THAT LOCAL AREA, PLEASE SPEAK UP!!

Those rigs usually get stolen for the tow rig and trailer or often just the trailer. I'd be looking in back alleys in a five mile radius to see if I could spot the burb.

If you can get photos, there is also a stolen car alert spot on Hotrod Hotline www.hotrodhotline.com that reaches a ton of people who may not follow the forums.

There is way too much of this going on lately.

Oh, that is terrible. Omar does the best restorations in the business. It shouldn't be hard to spot. I will keep my eyes out.

Does anyone have any more details on this?

Photos of the 'Burb or the tow rig?

I made this a sticky... I'll leave it up here for a little while.

I didn't realize there were two posts on this subject. Here's the info I posted in the Burbs and Panels section:

I just looked at craigslist for 1950's trucks and parts and nothing stood out. I will keep my eyes open, if you could pm me with more details, that would help. I can check throughout the US and Canada.

Post it HERE

HERE'S ANOTHER ONE TO POST ON.

If everyone keeps an eye out we CAN find this vehicle. Everyone take a good look at the pics. They will probably stash it for a while but the vehicle or the parts will surface so remember what it looks like even if you spot it 6 months from now.

I'm really sorry to hear about this. Let's catch these idiots and recover this vehicle. You sure Chip Foose doesn't have it?

Update on this... There's nothing new. The LAPD, and Downey PD have reportedly been exceptionally slow to respond. The owners of these vehicles are not feeling particularly optimistic at this point. My bet is that if the Suburban is still whole, it's in a shipping container in the Port of Long Beach destined for parts unknown.

I agree. We're all car guys and we all hang with other car guys of all stripes. I know a bunch of Porsche guys. We should make it a priority to form a loose alliance to drive these vermin out of our hobby regardless of what they try to steal.

I have ben searching ebay and craigslist, but I doubt that they will show up there. I would like to see some recent pictures and some details that would be unique to the truck that would help identify. The owner did contact me, but hasn't returned the call. I hope to speak with him.

I just talked to Rick, still no information on his Suburban. It was stolen at around 1:15 in the morning. There are some fuzzy pictures out there on the theft, but it has led to no new leads. The other truck was a 2005 3/4 ton Dodge Diesel and a tandem wheel trailer. Not too many identifying marks on the Suburban other than it was yellow.

There was another vehicle stolen a couple of years ago in Downey. I sent Rick the information and he talked to the guy, he says there has never been any additional information on his 1934 ford Phaeton. The ford is still missing.

So keep your eyes and ears out for this truck and post any information you hear.

FOUND!!and returned!

Hard to believe, but nearly 7 years after it was taken, my 1958 Suburban surfaced nearly unchanged and still 90% as it was when taken, and after thorough investigation, was returned.

A HEARTY Thank You to all who were involved from the start!

Special Thanks to Josh Hooker, Tom Campbell , Dave Wold and the five or six anonymous callers and e mailers who alerted me to it's being For Sale.

Special too to Lt Tim Schmidt, Anaheim, CA PD, Sgt. Leigh Lacey and Det.Lockwood from Downey,CA PD and CHP Officer Cesar Arias and his TRAP Team for getting involved and ultimately recovering the truck,

And also, to Omar Lugo for his input and assistance after the recovery.

Great news.

Did they nail the guys that stole the truck?

What did the "new owner" say when asked what he was doing with a stolen truck?

That I do not know.

They impounded the truck based on some Unique To That Particular Vehicle characteristics I had provided them. They didn't provide any further details, and I didn't push the matter, just paid the impound fees and picked it up.

Thanks again to all!, It sure made for a Nice Christmas Present!
