Will the above combination fit in a 38 chevy 1/2 ton? Is the length of the torque tube for the 1953/1954 longer/shorter than the 38 torque tube? I have been trying to find dimensions for the length of torque tube and rear end width with no results? Has anyone used this set up, heard about its use? Any pitfalls, recommendations?
As always you experience, knowledge, etc is appreciated

Don, I posted a tech tip on using this torque tube in my 46, check that out. Not sure on the length, but there should be lots of Chevys in Orange Co to measure. As I remember there was quite a bit of spline area at the U joint for fore and aft adjustment. Back when I did this swap it really was trick as the 3:55 gears really worked super in the truck. So you'll want a donor rear end from a powerglide car.

It's easier to get forgiveness than permission!

Hey guy I did that very thing over 40 years ago using a 49, still have the truck, heres the catch; The torque tube and driveline need shortened. The splines are different on the later car rearend and you will need a 1/2 and 1/2 U joint, custom of course. You need to reweld the spring hangers (perches). The springs mount in front of the axle and not on top, so you have a problem with the wheel in the wheel opening, as well as riding lower. The emergency brake system will have to be rubed. 5 lug axels I overcame by drilling new holes in the front backing plates using the 49 hubs and 1/2 and 1/2 bearings and race.
40 or more years takes its toll, I have it apart at the moment, under rehabilitation. Will be leaving in 3 weeks for the Winter, if I can help before we leave.
