I really did do a search I promise it's just nothing came of it except me getting caught up on some forums.
Here is the deal,
1938 1 1/2 ton tow truck.
Bought it from a guy who was owed money by another guy doesn't know anything about the truck other then he took out a 6 volt bat. that was corroding everything.
So I have had it a few months other projects get done and my 10 year old son wants us to put it in the last car show of the year, (this weekend) so we start on getting it running.
new battery (6volt) new spark plugs, new wires spark plug wires, starter won't start.
(rebuild the starter) so now starter works but won't turn over the engine block frozen solid.
(spend two days putting penetrating oil in cylinder drug it around the block freed up engine) so now starter turns over engine.
still no start.
So I check coil. coil says 12v on it. (starts my mind thinking) obviously no spark from coil.
ordered a 6v coil from NAPA (will be here this afternoon)
but that 12v on the coil got me to thinking (some of the things were new when I got the truck, distributor rotor, distributor cap, points and condenser, and new coil)
The coil is new but it does say 12v.
so I look to the generator/ alternator.

It looks like a a 6volt generator to me BUT like I said that 12v coil got me to thinking.
If you have stayed with me to this point THANK YOU because here is my question.

The Generator is a Delco Remy and it looks original, I tried to clean the plate it cleaned up pretty well. I tired to look at the number
I can't see the whole plate but this is what I got. 1 space I think there is a number or letter is here but I can't read it then it goes 12700 another space but this one is intentional (i think) then it goes 1c14 so to me it looks like this.

can any of you great and knowledgeable people help me out? Is this a 6 volt generator or has the truck been converted to 12 v.

Oh yea I forgot to tell you it has an external regulator (I don't know if that matters)

Many generators start out with 111. 1112700 would be logical Delco number for a generator. My book is dated 1960 and it is not listed, but it could very well have been superseded. A generator shop with complete Delco books could chase it down. It is very common for incorrect parts to be installed by previous owners. If the engine is any where near original it would have been 6 volt. I would install the 6 volt coil and worry about the generator once you get the engine running. Make sure you do not use any stale gas to try to start it. Stale gas can cause valves to hang open and cause serious damage. I usually bypass everything and I hang an aluminum gokart tank about 2 feet over the carb. Are you getting spark? I have seen points gapped way to wide and no gap. Your carb may be plugged up which of course will be another issue. When I buy a jalopy that someone else has replaced parts on, I assume all the parts to be wrong, and if a part is correct, I consider myself lucky.
