Just got back my short block after the rebuild by the machine shop. The machinist mentioned that there appeared to be some sort of "baffle" located inside the block right next to where the fuel pump operating lever hits the cam. Apparently this baffle prevents oil from sloshing all over the fuel pump lever. Held in by two bolts from the inside he thought. Any ideas if this is true and if so, anyone know what the baffle looks like? Mine's missing.

49 geezer, i am not sure what you call the plate. my engine is a 1954 truck 261.I think you are talking about the splash plate that is bolted on the inside of the block where the down draft tube is located. I took some pictures of my plate, my block is at the machine shop,so i can't look at it for you.I don't recall one over the fuel pump. See the links for the pictures, hope this helps.

Geez, I don't have a 235/261 appart right now to check but I'm sure others will have this item for you. Also there should be a similar tin splash guard where the road draft tube goes in, I think, been some time since I've been inside one. What year is your motor? If it's the late style with BIG 1/2" pipe thread oil holes on manifold side, make sure you check to see if the OIL PLUG is pushed in for full pressure. If you have smaller oil holes not a big deal.

If you have the BIG oil line holes and plug is pushed in YOU MUST RUN A FILTER WITH BIG LINES.

Yes there is a small tin plate inside the crankcase on 235/261 that goes over the hole for the road draft tube and acts as a baffle.
It is held in place by what looks like spiral push pins for lack of a better name.
Almost like a 6/32 screw size miniature easy out

Mine has coarse sheet metal screws. The screws go in from the outside of the block and into the plate on the inside of the block.This is on my 1954 261, hope this helps.

My engine is a '58. Bowtie, that plate kinda looks like what I would think would go inside the block. I just got the block back and will be taking it to my garage on Thursday. I'll take some pics of the area that I'm talking about and post them. Maybe with the crankshaft pointing up, I can also see just how the draft tube fits in and what baffling (same as this subject) is or isn't there. Steve, is the plate you are referring to located in such a way that it prevents oil sloshing towards the fuel pump. I know that when I installed my double acting pump a while back, I used gasket cement but after a while, oil was visible around the base of the pump. Not sure if thats a factor, but possibly could be.

Got a plate from Pat down in Alabama. Once I get that in, can put the pan on and finish. Thanks!

Final answer! The pics loaded by bowtietim are correct. Go the plate fromPat and installed it yesterday. Perfect fit. Thanks!
