I just had a good '47 216 given to me-would that be enough motor for this truck? I just plan to use it for hauling trash and running errands,so highway use won't be an issue. I fear the 3.08 gearing will be too high for this engine to carry,but I can change from the tall 16" wheels to 15" wheels and 235/75-15 tires and soften up the overall ratio a little. I think,while I have it all apart I'll install the car 4 speed I have in the garage. Any comments/ideas from the worthy advisors?

The Pont. engine with 3.08 gears tuned right will get nearly as good mileage as the 216. It would take 10 years to save enough to pay the difference. It would lower the value of the truck, make it less dependable & less pleasure to drive. :confused:

I haven't pulled it from the truck yet,the owner says it's frozen up.Missing water pump,ignition wiring and cap/rotor,starter.Where's he best prices for bearings,rings(possibly pistons too) gasket set? Anybody have a spare 3X1 intake to fit it? Who sells aluminum valve cover,side cover etc. for it? I've found lotsa stuff like that for bellybutton-I mean BOW TIE motors,but not much for GMC.This will have to be a relatively low buck rebuild,so I'll try not to mess with the hot rod stuff until I have it in and running.
Will the HEI to 235 conversion work on the GMC 248? Would it be worthwhile to have the head milled while it's apart?
Any tips,info preferred parts suppliers or money saving hints on this thing will be gratefully accepted!
