alright here we go.
My dad and I just bought a 1952 Chevrolet pickup. It does not have the original 216 motor but it does have a 235 motor from a 1954 winch truck. we plan to restore it but make it safer, with modern brakes, maybe be able to do 60 mph. the truck was at one point a U.S. Navy truck, there is a plate on the glove box that says "Navy Department" and then lists the specifics of the truck. the engine runs strong and heathly.
Now to the questions!

1. I want to be able to go 60 mph, what all do i need to do?

2.We found out that there is no oil filter. We find this odd, because this is out first "vintage truck", and we would prefer an oil filter. is there an add on system to put on the engine to have the filter?

3. Our truck is a 3 window, and my dad originally wanted a 5 window. but we found this truck to be a steal, so we got it instead. what can be done to the cab concerning the conversion of it to a 5 window?

4. the shift linkage keeps getting stuck on the manifold. this can become quite annoying on the road when you can't shift out of first gear. is the 235 manifold gonna have to be replaced with a "low profile manifold"? or do we need new linkages? it can eventually shift into second and then third, but it takes a lot of persuasion. my dad initially mentioned taking a grinder to it to give it more room, but i dont want to see a mangled manifold in a soon-to-be perfect engine bay

5. And finally are there any speed parts? like 4 barrel carbs, bigger cams, headers, and stuff like that.

We have only had the truck for five days, and it has already been a blast.

Welcome zaboomafoo, glad to have you. Better to have a US Navy truck than an 'Old Navy' truck.

Oil filters were an option back in 1952. I think the military didn't use or change oil filters very much, at least not here in Canada.

Don't use the grinder on the manifold, there has to be a better way.

5 days = a blast... think about 5 years...

Have fun! Leo

yes the guys will love to get into all your question but in the individual forums. There is a lot you can do for your speed, but one thing at a time. Remember when you change one thing for speed, you will have to change a lot more to accomadate those changes. My 50 truck has a Ford oil filter on it which makes it easy to change. You sure will have fun, Good luck.

1: different rear end gearing - also, work on the brakes (disc conversions are prevalent.
2: you can add an oil filter
3: yes, it involves new panels and a good bit of work. A 5-window cab may be easier
4: Floor shifter? (or see 5)
5: split exhaust manifolds, multi-carbed manifolds, 4-barrel manifolds, turbos, etc. are all available. Best driving is an EFI conversion, do a search in the HI-PO section.

Welcome to the bolt.

scott danforth- its a 3 on the tree. and after peeling away the "custom" floor pan to reveal the "swiss cheese" original floor boards, a 5 window cab with less rust can be a better choice.

fasteddie- pearland is not so far away from me!!!
