The problem is, is that when we got the pump, it didnt have a pulley, so we pulled one off of a random truck at the junk yard that looked similar.I think that its too small,and is causing cavitation which is causing my engine to overheat.I measured the pulley and it came out to be between 4.5 and 5 inches wide.heres some pics.tell me what you think.Do i need to find a different pulley?Is there a place where i can order just a pulley that is the right size? how about a shroud on the radiator?
my '50's 216's is only a tad over 4", but my '56-'61's 235's is 7". and the pics i see for the 235s-261s have pulleys that appear to be closer to the 1 to 1 ratio with the crank pulley | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 | The pump you have looks like it needs the 7" pulley. The earlier pumps use about a 4.25" pulley but the later uses a 7" version. Just to make sure I have to ask: Does your current pump have round fins that sit "inside" the block? It loks like a round circle and there is a matching big round hole on the front of the block. The old version doesn't have a big hole as the pump mounts on the outside front of the block. Look at this picture: water pumps The pump on the left is the later version and looks like yours.

Check the salvage yards, should be able to find a correct pulley for it. If you don't have one, you may want to grab the fan, too. I would suggest looking at school busses, the later ones have a 5 blade fan that is much better than the 4 blade. You'll want to consider adding a shroud, too, for best efficiency.

I've seen several people at swap meets with a selection of pulleys. I think Cletis is right. I mess with GMC as well as Ford y blocks. I'm quite sure that a Y-block ford will work and they have about the same belt width as your alternator. It seems like you have a narrow pulley on your vibration damper too. Fans appear on eBay ever so often. A shroud will help a lot. We used to build them out of 14 gauge cut the size of the radiator to bolt on the radiator mounts. Then cut a hole about an inch larger than the fan diameter and then make a circle out if 1" flat and weld it to the edge of the hole. By the way,this is danny, the poster of this thread, just using my account now, not my dads account.dont get confused.anyways, now i heard that i might have the wrong radiator because i dont have room to fit a fan on the water pump pulley.im gunna research that tomorrow.all i want to do is get the pulley on the pump.i think we've established that its about a 7 in pulley?

Danny,
It looks like you have a long-shaft water pump. The first thing you might be interested in doing is to identify the year f you engine. It is not a 1954 261.
The 55-2nd through 1963 235/261 water pump will not allow enough space for the fan to be mounted; and, the location of the 55-63 fan is not ideal.
The relocation adapter-plate (mentioned above by Virginiafiretruck" will allow a 1955-1st or earlier water pump to be used. This will (1) put the fan in the correct location, (2) the older pump will have the correct pully size, and (3) you would be able to choose a pump that has a pulley with the correct groove=width to match the grooves in your harmonic balancer's and alternator's pulleys.
If you just want to change your pulley, maybe someone will post information on where to find a pulley, and how to remove the existing pulley, and how to press on the "new" pulley in the correct location, and how to trim the excess material off the pulley-post.

Danny, if you can't easily find a pulley I'd recommend the adapter plate and old style water pump rather than buying an after market pulley from a specialty supplier. I'm sure it would be nearly as expensive as the adapter. | | |
