The problem: No tire shop will touch the rims, citing legal and horror stories as reason. Request: Does anyone have knowledge of a wheel to replace the RH5 10-bolt rim? The wheels are hub-centered - not wheel nut centered - having a 5.5 hole.
The truck runs well but not having even half-decent rubber means it will become a driveway decoration unless substitute wheels are found. However, 2 piece or 3 piece motor wheel was used during the same period and they are interchangeable. One of my old 2 tons has the RH 5 wheels which I would like to replace, but haven't found anything near where I live in Texas. I have changed the dangerous kind, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to do this that didn't grow up with them. Watch things like Craigslist or post a parts wanted. I am near Vancouver at the moment and there are lots of old farm trucks in this area. I would think you could find something. And I stand corrected; the wheels are indeed 5.25 with 7.25 bolt circle. Availability of older vehicles in this area is, at best, sparse, as is the interest in a truck of 'that age'. (If'n it don't carry 40+ tons of logs or better it ain't a truck.) Nonetheless, I shall advertise for suitable wheels. The Tech Tip is a great read and certainly clarifies many of my concerns.
As for a photo, well, I have one and will attempt to post it but the dial-up in this region is akin to a native runner carrying a forked stick thus success is by no means guaranteed. I debated what to do with the wheels on our 55 1st series 4400. We made the decision to stay origional. I am assuming that they are the same as yours.
No tire shop is going to touch these wheels. BUT - the heavy duty on site tractor tire guys have no problem with them. They do them all the time (many tractors and machinery that are still in use hail from the time period of these wheels). Just give one in your area a call and I bet you'll have no problem getting him to come out.
FYI - we had all 6 tires (70 50 20's) installed on site for $1200.
