I am trying to take off my timing chain cover and took all screws out until bottom two that are reversed. The threads are sticking out the holes towards me. There is no other way to get from the other side, unless I am crazy, which is a possibility. I am stumped. I am thinking the only thing I can do is drill the bolt out enough to smash is down and be able to slide the cover off, then I should be able to take the inside plate off that is against the engine. Am I crazy or on the right track?

Try a bolt wrench.

what kind of motor are you talking about?

My guess is you're working on a Stovebolt six. Those two bottom bolts are indeed accessed from inside the crankcase. You need to pull the pan. Your engine has no timing chain, it has timing gears.

After you have pulled the pan and those two bolts, drill and tap them the next size up, from the outside...this is a time honored 'McGurk' trick.

Just another hint: if you have pulled on the timing cover, it may be bent at the bottom. When you get it apart you should check for that otherwise it will leak like crazy.

Thanks guys, I have not pulled on it, but will check to see if it is bent and I was going to pull the pan off in a couple days, but guess I will do it sooner. Sorry I did not specify that it is a 6 cyl 235 in 57 chevy. I really appreciate it.
