I just noticed a knocking/popping sound the seems to be coming from the steering linkage around the front passenger side of my '64 1/2 ton. Weird thing is, the popping seems pretty random and happens when I'm going straight, not really even touching the steering.
Does this sound symptomatic of a grease-poor bearing? Is there anything else you think I should consider? I greased these all up maybe a year ago but now I'm second-guessing whether the zerks were clean enough, if it isn't just time for more grease, etc.

However, if you have rubber bushings (dry bolt bushings) in your suspension, they will pop if the bolt is rusted in the bushing. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | The problem is a dry balljoint. You may on the right track with the grease fittings not allowing the grease in. try installing new fitings then re-grease them. You might also consider shooting some Blaster or other penetrant oil in to loosen things up a bit. if the noise persists, it's time for new balljoints.

They pop when they flex while turning or hitting bumps. You may notice some wander too if they are warn. But if not warn and only dry it might not be too late.
For my money - I'd just replace them. They are cheap & if you've ever had one fail at speed you'd never forget it! | | |
