All the troubleshooting here plus talking to Tom Langdon narrowed it down to a clogged jet. Instead of tearing that down, I punted and switched to the Holley weber. Now it's running great. But..we went with an electric fuel pump from Napa, and it hammers like a machine gun for up to a minute when I re-start it hot. I'm thinking it's pulling for fuel and getting an air bubble or something. The duration of the hammering will depend how long it takes to fill the fuel bowl and come up to pressure. Mount the fuel pump as far away as possible, and use rubber isolation mounts. Then you could go back to mechanical and problem solved.
