old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | I've got the balancer off and need a source for a reliable rebuilder that can give me a quick turn around. Since I have it off to replace the seal I don't see any sense in putting it back on with what I know is 60 year old dried out rubber. Any of you had one rebuilt lately??? I'm assuming that there are now new ones being made to fit the 216's? Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

Damper doctor, $320 plus S&H out and back, way to expensive.
Anyone ever heard of Dale Mfg., Salem, OR? Looks like about a hunderd bucks and $12 shipping.
Heck, at some of these prices, I'm bout ready to make a fixture, buy some urethane, and pour my own, that appears to be all they are doing after they get them cleaned up.
There I go, off on another adventure!!!!!! Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

I'd take a chance on Dale Mfg.
I am not sure if the one on my 54 235 (hydra-matic transmission) is good or bad but I'll send mine off next week. I'll let you know how it turns out.

After cleaning, blasting, potting and painting I guess a hundred bucks taint so bad. He claims to have been in business since the 70's that's somewhere round thirty years, orta know what he's doing by now. I'm gonna check over at the Chatter and see if any of the old timers have had any exposure to him. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

You call them, you send it, they fix it, they call you, you give them a credit card or send a check, they return it. It was quick for us because they are within 200 miles from here. The HB for the 270 was in multiple pieces, they reinstalled the ring on new rubber, rebucked the rivets for the pulley, installed the ss sleeve at the seal and repainted it semigloss black. They did a good job. Ed | | | | | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 1,517 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 1,517 | I guess i'll throw away Damper Doctors card. Damper Dudes are closer and 1/2 the price! Joe | | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 554 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 554 | This thread got me worrying about using a 50+ year old damper on my rebuilt 235. Since Damper Dudes is located about 1/2 way on my 20 mile drive to work I stopped in the other day. I have been trying to decide whether to use the 216 or 235 balancer so I brought both with me. The business is mainly a race engine shop with a small sign that also says Damper Dudes.
Not knowing the personal I asked the guy in the shop if he was one of the Dudes. I am holding the 2 balancers in my hand at this point. His response "216 Chevy and 235 Chevy- do you think I'm one of the Dudes?". I was convinced by that he knew what he was doing and had the 216 damper rebuilt. It looks new and the rubber has some give, unlike the rock hard old rubber. Was this necessary? Not sure I will ever know but I am not cutting corners anywhere else on the truck so it is worth it to me. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | I have heard nothing but good things about Dales. It is a one man band, he talks to his customers and takes pride in what he does. GMC balancers were $115 a couple of years ago. http://www.dalemfg.com/harmonicbalancer_018.htm | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 662 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 662 | I've used Dale's Corvair dampers and flywheels, no problems. They have a reputation of quality. | | |
