Just got quotes from a vendors to haul a big bolt from Idaho to Conn. Not running but rolling. Roughly $3000. Seems a bit steep? Can you folks give me any advice or insight or offer up any options?

I am in the trucking business, and that seems a little on the high side, especially for a partial. Try posting an ad on this site and watch it daily. http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/haulquery.pl Last month I picked up a 1957 GMC wrecker in PA and hauled it to Texas. I picked up several partials just to help a little with expenses and charged $.75 a mile. However, with my commercial hauling, I try for $3.00 a mile. If you are not pressed for time and can provide the truck with loading and unloading, you should get it done for less than $1.00 a mile. I do that for people who share my interest in old vehicles and it is a common practice.

They were the best priced of about 10 I tried, the highest of which was $9000 BTW. Kiwi treated me like family, and were a class job. I don't know how big what you are hauling is, but I will never use anyone else. It is no discount to do so, but you can tell them that jeepers creepers tom sent you! They should know me. incidently, I spent 2400 from florida to california for a non running, no brakes 1.5 ton truck. Hope this helps.

Hey John I used Express Auto Transport They hauled a 51 Chev Coe from the state of washington to ct for a little less than 1700.00

I looked at everything from tranport companies (all of which had to find a comntract hauler due to the size), light/partial load flatbeds, to rail transport through BN&SF. for a 980 mile trip the lowest I found from Washington to Southern CA was 1,400, highest was over 4,000 door to door.
I had some luck with folks at the tow411.com forums, there are some outfits that will occasionaly do random long hauls, pric3e according to milage, but some of em were fairly reasonable.

Something else you might check into is a post on BigMackTrucks.com. They have several members in the Northwest,and many are equipped for hauling bigger loads. They're good folks too.
Speed

John, HOW big of a bolt are yu talkin about anyway? Is it something that could fit on a 10K equipment trailer, or would it be better suited to a 16K goose-neck?
And also, do ya think you could take the time off to get it yourself?
The option I was gonna go for (until our world took a couple turns around the toilet) was to borrow a truck and bolrrow/rent a trailer. Between the fuel costs and the trailer rental it was still the least costly option on the board.
Well aside from driving it, total cost was gonna be 3 days, about $700 for gas/food/lodging, and 10 years off my spine! Not an opton for your rig tho.
