I have a 6 cyl. 235ci in a 57 chevy that I am trying to pull the lower pulley off which I am guessing is also the harmonic balancer? Anyway, I got the harmonic puller on it and when I try and tighten with the socket wrench it just turns the engine and the pistons all start going up and down. I have tried tapping on it a bit, but you really can't get behind it to tap from behind. I was told it was just a press on and should come off, but I just don't get it. What the hell is holding it on if it is just pressed on. Thanks for any replies and please be kind because I have no clue what I am talking about. The harmonic balancer is pressed on. You have the puller and are using it right. Put you vehicle in gear so that you have the weight of the vehicle to help hold the engine in place. Otherwise you will just spin the engine like you said you were doing. Wouldn't hurt to spray some kind of penetrant onto/into the pully either. Try WD40 or PB Blaster, I have had good luck with those. Good luck, and let us know how it turned out!

Why are you taking it off?

I am having the cyl head looked at, at machine shop, and should be putting it back together this week. I am taking it apart, because the car has not been run for 7 years and before it was parked and left alone, it is easy to tell all the gaskets are in need of replacing. So I am replacing every gasket, and taking the opportunity to learn at the same time. We don't have to have it right now to drive, so I want to get more familiar with it now, before we start driving it. It also just needs a good cleaning, but it is in pretty decent shape. Thanks again, and I will be looking on here daily just to pick up some knowledge. | | |
