I've just acquired a Chevy truck and am looking for some info based on the numbers from the plate. They are:

Engine Number - T19335
Model - 1543
VIN - 61543611286

I was hoping some one may know what these mean. I was told that it is a 1958 6 cyl 2 ton.

welcome to the garage sinefire, there's lots of Canucks here, one will have the model ID - I'm not sure on that part, it's definitely a big bolt, over 1T, and I think "cab and chassis" from the factory .... the first number of the vin indicates it's a '56, or at least the tag is from a '56 .... if it has the single headlights it's 55-7. 58 & 9 have dual headlights

6 -year 1956
1543 - Model Cab with chassis 2 ton 160" wheel base
611286 - identifies the particular truck

What else do you need to know?
I assume this is a Mapleleaf truck.

Can't wait for pics!

46HalfTon is right!

As he indicated, that's what those numbers mean.

I'm pretty sure though, that with those numbers, that is a Chevy truck.

Chev's model ID's started with '15'---Mapleleaf's with '16'---GMC's with '91'.

Thanks a bunch for the info. It helps a lot.

Pics are on the way.
Last night I changed out the burnt generator for an alternator and now we're running pretty good.

I'm lucky to have found a couple of parts trucks near by as well.

I do have one more question...

What size engine would this truck have? I'm guessing 235.

The 235 doesn't seem to have much acceleration power in 3rd and 4th. Could this be because of the small engine vs. big truck? Really should I be expecting much anyway?

hey Guy, welcome to the garage .... the place we find our info wink just start a thread in either the truck talk or the great white north forum, with something about 'maple leaf' in the title and someone will pony up eventually, there's a couple here with quite a bit of info about them - really re-badged GMC's

sinefire - the 235 isn't gonna have a lot of high end, the power is in the mid and low ranges, which is why the big trucks are geared as they are, don't expect to be flyin low on the highway grin

I would have thunk that the engine would have been a 261, not a 235? I was under the impression that small 46's had the 216 and bigger had the 261.

Red58 - My Mapleleaf looked like a rebadged Chevrolet, not GMC. it had the Chevy Grill on it but the engine valve cover had GMC punched into it.

Guy,
I used to have a 1941 3 ton. Check my Flickr site. You are in the right place for info. I have not found many sites about the Canadian trucks. http://www.brads41-46chevys.com/ has some info about them. Otherwise get options package from GM. www.vintagevehicleservices.com It is well worth the money!

sinefire's truck is a 56 .... my understanding was Mapleleafs [just a 'model' by the 50's] were on GMC chassis .... but yes, the big'uns may have had 261's out of a Chevy plant, some casting numbers should tell
