I drug home this mangy 58 'bout 6 months ago.

I like to tinker when I have the time & I am starting to get excited about getting this one on the road.

What I've done so far.
1. Rear main seal
2. rebuilt brake master cyl.
3. New fuel pump
4. bought "new" rebuilt carb
5. added an ignition switch
6. started the truck
7. bought new spark plugs
8. started the truck again
9. started plugging oil leaks
10. bought new radiator cap to stop the water from boiling out & over heating
11. repaired the brake wiring
12. WD-40'd the drivers window regulator so I could roll down the window.

What I have not done yet
1. fix more oil leaks - the oil filter sucks!
2. Make the brakes safe to use on the road
3. new glass
4. new wipers
5. new wiper motor
6. maybe some heat
7. think about how bad I want high beams
8. add a tailgate
9. buy insurance

I thought I had it today - it was running nice & I was waiting to see if it would get hot. It sprang another leak at the old oil filter. What a pain this thing is. I've ordered the new spin on one. It should be here in a week.

Heck I might even be on the road yet this decade!

thx joe - I've done that! The brakes work, but they are scary. I am planning a full power upgrade.

LOL.. My filter leaks from everywhere it seems. I thought I had it but then it sprang a new leak in the hose.

I like the old look of the truck, but I love the new technology. I plan to upgrade the oil filter, wipers, brakes etc. I see no reason to fight with the part store guys when they have no idea what a 1958 anything is.

My advice to this is..... find a different parts store. I have had to do that a few times. That's assuming you have a variety. Once you find a store where the people know what you are talking about you will find yourself really enjoying the trips.

When I go to get parts for my trucks I cross reference everything first so I can tell them what else will fit.
Most parts employee's are too young to know anything about these old trucks.

I guess I am very lucky. I have a local NAPA. The guys in there don't even need to look most parts up for me. They know just what I want and where it is. of course they have a gallery of pictures of old cars that belong to their customers in there which is a good indication they are familair with this stuff. (my truck picture will be up there very soon)

There is another local parts store where the kid didn't know what points were when I went in to buy them.

I also got a front end alignment from a good local place. they did a great job but I had to start the truck for them after I put it on the lift. (The kid wanted it started so he could turn the steering wheel ...go figure)

Its all part of the adventure I suppose.

Same here, Napa is a little more expensive than most of the other stores(by just a couple dollars or so) here but they are well worth that little extra because I've never had any frustration or quality issues with them.

I've got it a bit better than most. Not only do I have a Napa, but I also have a locally owned independant parts store as well. Actually, the local Napa stores (got 3 in Vermilion Co.) are all owned locally as well. The independant store, Danville Auto Parts, many times actually has the part I need in stock, and if not, can have it to me in less than a week. They mostly carry Federal-Mogul brands, Wagner, Moog, Fel-Pro, Anco, but also Mr. Gasket and are a licensed Holley dealer. They also carry just about anything a guy could need from Permatex/Loctite. Also, within a block of that store, I have an exellent machine shop, Phil's, that's been in business for a long time, and also an auto paint supplier, Danville Omni Color, a PPG dealer. I've also got a couple of good salvage yards withing a reasonable drive that do not crush vintage tin. Check out my WebShots pix in my signature, there's some shots in ther under Junkyard finds to see an example of what they have.

Longbox - you are living high on the hog! I have an autozone, & when I called my napa (I can't remember what part I was looking for now) they didn't know what it was or where to get it.

DAP is one of those old school parts stores, where they actually look stuff up in the book, rather than just on a computor. While they do have one, it's used mainly for inventory purposes, rather than parts lookup.

I got the remote transmission filter kit yesterday & have it mostly installed today.

I found this how to.

http://www.speedprint.com/deves50/oilfilterinstall.php

Mine isn't quite a neat & clean as this one. I'm using rubber transmission line instead of copper. I fabricated the bracket today. It was the first time I've actually tried something like that. I'm not much of a welder.

I'll take a couple of pics when I get it completely put together.
The cool thing is - no more leaks & no searching for obscure filters!

Good stuff!
