Hello,
I am restoring my 57 Chevy back to 100% stock. I removed the 4 speed and am putting the 3 speed back in the truck. Does the bell housing that was with the 4 speed fit the 3 speed tranny? I will be painting the 235 stock engine gray. Was the bell housing and tranny the same color as then engine back when it was new or was the bell housing and tranny a different color?

Thank you!

Jon

Thanks!

yes the bellhouse is the same either trans - if it was painted at all [I'd say maybe] it would be the same color as the engine, which was painted assembled, possibly including the bellhouse

Hy UnklRod, If the bellhousing is the correct one for the truck, then either a four speed or three speed will bolt up to it, As to the paint issue, that's a good question.

The wonderful thing about Chevys, from day 1, ALL trannys, automatics and manual, fit All engines and their housings, 6's and V8's alike. clear to the late 80's. Fords? NO, MOPAR? NO. I know I'm not supposd to ever say ALL, but I did it anyway.

Hy bartamos, you said "ALL" you know your not supposed to say "ALL", I guess it all depends when your "day 1" is. Obviously your day one is not before 1963, and actually it continued into the mid nineties.

Actually the original V8 from 1955 continued 48 years to 2003. I think the LS and LT went past the mid 90's also. 1963 would be a good year 1. New 6 and new V8(Mark IV) all were bell housing interchangeable. Ouch, I said ALL again. Before 63 the 216 and 235 and 261 were interchangeable and the early V8's were, but not 6 to V8/ V8 to 6. The rear end of a pre 63 V8 or 6 bell housing will mate to the same pre 63 3 speed Manual.(1955 for example)

Sorry for the off topic, but I'm getting ready to sell my 4 speed trans and bell housing (1955 2nd series)to a guy who has a 350 SBC (in a Landcruiser). Are you saying that the 6 cyl bell housing will not work on the 350 SBC?

TIA,
Joe

The 62 on back 6 cyl. bell houseing will not fit v-8 engines or the 63 up 6 cyl.
