For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 17 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 17 | Hi, Everybody I'm trying to get the rear brake drum off a 1949 Chevy 4400 ton and a half truck. From the online manual http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0504.htm it looks like the drum should come off after the lugs have been removed. Is this correct? How does one "grab onto the drum". I don't have a puller that big.... Thanks for any help you can offer! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 | Hy Harrell, there may be two or three slotted head screws retaining the drum to the hub, scrape around and see what you find. Also you may have to back your brake adjustment down to get the drum off, usually there is a ridge in the drum at the inboard edge, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 | Just wrap your arms around the drum and start rocking it while pulling outward.Of course this is after you've made sure shoes are backed off and sloted screws mentioned above are removed. Be prepared for the wieght when it slides off. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 86 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 86 | "same as above" but I soaked the drum around the hub area and lug bolts with PB Blaster penetrating oil. That helped me. I used a heavier rubber dead blow mallet and whacked it several times too.
