Given adequit rest time it starts fine. System is origional 6volt. Coil gets pretty hot. Is this due to a lack of a ballast resister, bad coil etc.? Any ideas? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | Shouldn't need a ballast resistor. When this happens check the circuit with a trouble light until you loose power also check all the wiring and connections.
Shop manual should tell you how to check the coil or local auto parts may be able to check it also.

Since GMC's are POS ground, the "hot" wire from the ignition switch goes to the NEG side of the coil. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 1,403 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 1,403 | Also could be that it IS a bad coil. One would think that if something is wired backward nothing would work, right? If I went outside and rewired my coil I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work, but I may be wrong. From what I've heard it sounds like the coil is bad but it could be something else. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | Coils will work with the polarity reversed. However, as coils warm up, the windings expand. If the insulation is bad, the coil will stop functioning. If this is the case, replacing the coil is the only option. 6 Volt coils do not need resistors when used in a 6 volt system. Try a different coil and make sure the polarity is right. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 56 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 56 | Checked wiring on Coil. + terminal is connected to ignition swith, - terminal to distributor. I guess next step is replacing the coil. Any more advice? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | I agree with the bad coil theory. It will work whether or not the polarity is correct. | | |
