i am starting a build in a month or so that will entail a 6.6L duramamx motor onto a 1965 K20. i recently researched my tranny and motor more in depth and found that a ZF S6-650 cannot handle the amount of torque the duramax can put out. i would love to stick with a six speed manual. if anyone knows of any trannsmissions that will work please let me know. if not i was wondering if i can floor mount the shifting controls for an allison tranny?
thanks
Jonathan

the ZF should be fine, if not pull a trans from a Dodge with the Cummins. it will depend solely on how you drive and how much weight you are pulling.

I know that you can floor mount an eaton.

ok well i am looking to find a six speed and the ZF would work for now but not if i ever want to mod this motor i am getting with a chip or better injectors or anything that would increase the torque. than the zf would be outmatched. i dont have much knowledge of the trannies that will fit to diesels. i honestly didnt know the eaton made transmissions. i will look into it. thank you very much

Eaton makes transmissions for the larger straight trucks. Do your research on transmissions. Even the mighty Allison will have issues with enough torque. However if you cant hook up the rear wheels, you cant transfer the torque. That simply equates to wheels spin. do a search for transmission specialist that deal with hopped up diesels. In fact, give the folks at Gale Banks a call. They play with duramax's all the time and get up to 750 hp. they can point you toward a transmission that will live.

Alright well i have been on some diesel forums as well and the only person i have found that has broken a ZF S6-650 was a man who was pulling a sled in high range with a truck that is in the 1500 ft lbs range so i dont think i need to worry about the ZF. i have multiple persons who have the tranny in their trucks with 1000ft lbs+ but i will still research all the info yu have given me. thanks!!!

P.S. is there a way to delete threads that you dont use anymore or do they just stay in the archive for someone else to look up?

actually they won't be glad to do it, unless there's some fightin goin on, individual threads aren't just for the immediate help of a single poster, the reason there is an archive is so all the wisdom spouted herein is preserved for posterity wink

might be someone next month or next year searching 'ZF S6-650' who could learn something from this thread without having to ask

Bill

Tis' true, I'd be happy to clean up any non-knowledge sharing posts or make any edits to clean up any spelling/grammar but if it's good stuff then no.
