I found a 12 bolt posi out of a 1973 Buick Gransport that has been sitting for about 20 years. I plan on putting it in my 57 3100 but the posi has huge brackets welded on it for the Buicks rear torsion bars. My question is what is the best way to remove these big thick brackets and a few other things from the rearend when a person has no cutting torch? I also have to remove the leaf spring pads from my old chevy rearend and weld them onto the posi. I have an Arc welder and a Mig but I have no cutting torch. I could rent an oxy/acetylene outfit just for the cutting but I'm wondering how many of you have tried removing welds with a grinding wheel?

I have used an air cutoff wheels and electric grinders and torches. You just have to not get to excited when using a electric grinder because the metal comes off real quick.

I just recently did a 10 bolt. I used a plasma cutter. I suppose a sawsall and a grinder would work. The trick during all of this is to not distort the tubes when you do the job, no matter what removal method you use. No distortion from a hammer or from heat.

As for the spring perches, spend the $20 and get some from www.currieenterprises.com or www.chassisengineeringinc.com .
