I will be getting a set of 6 lug rally rims for my 61 Apache...they were added in with the sale, but I'm finally getting them in a week. The guy said they are wider than the original rims. So I need to find tires for them. They are apparently off a 1970s 4x4. Do any of you know the correct size of tires for these? My truck is riding on a worn set of 235/75R15's right now. They'll have to be wider than that...

why do they have to be wider?
you can probably find a way to install about anything you want.. I had your size on my 52 halfton and that rode well..

be advised that the bolt also has a special place for folks in the great white North to post.... they always have a lot to say..lol

The 4x4 Rallyes are 15x8. A 225/75/15 is about as small as one would want to go, as anything smaller tends to be stretched out too much. Most of the original trucks with that wheel used one of the following sizes, 10.00-15, 31x10.50x15, 235/75/15.
If you're happy with how the 235/75/15s perform, there will be no problem using them on the Rallyes. The 31x9.50x15 also works very well on them. That is the size I'm running on mine.
Joker, alot of the issue with tire to rim sizing invilves proper sidewall support. General rule of thimb is that you have a rim that's approximatly 1"-2" narrower than the section width of the tire. Example, a 10" section width tire would run on an 8" rim. Improper sidewall support can lead to erratic handling and/or premature tire failure. Another case in point, I mounted a set of 31x10.50x15s on a Jeep using the stock 6" wheels. I did warn the owner that they would be too narrow, and that there would be handling issues, but she wanted them anyway. A few days later, she came back with a severe wandering complaint. I drove it, for sure, it was all over the palce. We ordered a set of 15x8 wheels, installed them with the same tires, drove like new afterward. In fact, it actually drove better than it did with the stock 205/75/15 tires, as the wider tires provided better stability.

roger , I am no tire expert but I thought what he had would work ok..

now days folks seem to put all type of weird size on their rides.

I still have the correct size on my 70 International half-ton, been on it for 20 yrs.......wonder if I should replace them? probably will be hard to find the same size, got the mud grip type on the rear, starting to crack a little... I dont drive it much except in the pasture, ever once in awhile I will take it down the country road when the sheriff isn't looking..lol

Longbox55 is right on target with his reply. I just took a set of 6 lug 4x4 rallys off my '65 C10 SWB Step-side. It had 235/75/15's on the front and 31x10.5-15's on the back. I had no clearance issues and the tire wear was even on all 4 tires. I personally just didn't like the look of the rally's and went with some vintage aluminum slots.

what will that do to the handling? And comparing your size to the ones on mine (235/75R15) yours are wider, yet a bit shorter....is that right?

Handling will improve, partly due to the larger contact patch, but also due to the stiffer sidewall. However, load capacity will be greatly reduced, and ride quality may suffer as well due to the stiff sidewall.

I have those same wheels on my '65 C10 . Until recently , I had 225/70/15's on the front and 275/60/15's on the rear . I replaced the rear tires with 255/70/15's for more clearance .This is on a stepside model .The tires fit the wheels ( 8 " wide ") really well .

Adam, the 6 lug 15x8 rally wheels were optional on all 1/2 ton 73-87 4x4 pickups & 73-91 Blazer, Jimmy & suburban.
235/75/15 is the correct size for those wheels, that's what they came with from the factory. some of the Blazers came with 31/10.5/15 also.
My 87 pickup came with the 235's. You can always go bigger if you dont like them. Iv'e had tires as big as 33/12.5/15 mounted on them on other trucks.

Can someone clarify to me what the numbers in a tire size mean? I know the last one (15) is the size of rim needed for the tire. The other two are width and height, but which is which? And what does "235" and "75" mean? I realize this is a general knowledge question in which I should probably know the answer, but it has never been explained to me.

Ok, finally got those rally rims. I measured the width of them...when you guys say they are 8 inches, you mean from the inside of the front lip to the inside of the back one? If that's so, yes, they are 8 inches wide. From edge to edge however, they are 9 inches. And do any of you know where or how I can find the center caps for these? I have three. one has no center however, because it was for the hub (4 wheel drive) and the other two say "4X4" I'd like to just find a whole new set, or two more with the centers.

The width is measuered on the inside of the flange, across the bead sealing area. There's several sources for the caps, the resto parts houses that carry parts for the later model trucks should have them, as does JC Whitney. IIRC, Whitney carrys them in sets of 4 that are all the closed design, the others may have them that way as well.

A while back I bought a new repop set off Ebay. Good quality and lowest price I could find for a set. They have Bowtie emblems.

These are 5 lug here, but it gives you an idea what to look / search for: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/73-8...torsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Happy hunting wave
