Stats: '62 Chevy C-10. Inline 6. Four on the floor. Granny low. One barrel carb. Distributor is back between the 4th and 5th spark plugs. Has the long inspection plate on the distributor side of the engine.

The parts guy at the Chevy dealership says the long inspection plate means it's a 292, but I saw somewhere on the net that the 292 wasn't put into pickups until '63.

What do I check to know for sure?

P.S. We put 292 plugs into it as part of a tune-up and noticed that the threads were longer on the plugs we installed than on the plugs we removed. I don't know if that's important. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

The 235 survived through 1962. The Chevy parts guy should know better. If it's a single long pushrod cover, then it's not one of the later motors - they all used two smaller covers. You've probably ot a 235, but check the casting number on the block to be sure. And if the head casting number ends in "848" or "850" then it's either a 235 or 261.

1962,

You have either a 235 or 261; the center location of the distributor (between cylinders #3 & #4) confirms this.

ALL 194/230/250/292 engines have the distributor at the front of the engine, between cylinders #1 & #2.

As for the "long" inspection cover (called a "tappet cover" or "side cover") on the side of the engine identifying it as a 292, I think what your buddy was referring to is that while the 230/250/292 engines are basically the same, the 292 has a taller block (longer stroke), and therefore, the 292 side pan is higher than on the 230/250.

Check the casting #s as described in preceeding posts to see if you engine is 235 or 261; externally they're the same size, differing only in factory paint color.

Good luck!

235 or 261.
the 292 had two side tappet covers that were taller than the 194-230-250.

hello 1962. i am worried about those longer plugs that you installed because they might bump into a valve or piston. i say this without actually going out to look at one of the heads i have, but i do remember that some of the chevy six plugs are alot longer than others. it would be too bad to ruin the engine because the plugs were the wrong application.good luck.

Yeah. Thanks. I've been thinking about that too....

I figure, it's running better than it was before, so no pistons or valves have hit the plugs. Still, since I now know I have one of the smaller engines, I should put in the correct plugs. Plus, the first plugs we pulled out were horribly black so I want to check these plugs and see how bad they look after a few hundred miles.

I appreciate your concern.

The long plugs won't hit anything because that head is cavernous in the plug area, but they will sieze in the head if you don't get them out soon. Anytime the threads protrude out past the edge of the head metal carbon builds up and siezes things.

AC Delco R45S gapped at .040" will work fine in almost any 235. Even better if you've got HEI or petronix ignition.

good luck

Count the valve cover bolts. 4 Bolts, 2 on each side of cover, generally equals 235.

Thanks Larry,

I just checked....

I guess that's what we have. It's got four. I can see a gasket change coming up soon right there.

Thanks sixpack,

We have the 848.

Hi Frank,

I looked at the casting #s but can't quite figure them out. Our block was/still partially is blue. Does that mean one particular engine?
