Projects done finally. thanks to all of you for answering all my questions.
heres the last issue.
56 235 6 cyl. the issue I have questions on is the connections to the carb and gas pedal.

I followed the book, looked through the forums all looks ok on my end. i dont have much gas pedal travel (maybe 2" total), choke seems ok. but I am not getting any gas, none appears in the clear glass gas filter. engine starts w/ starting spray, but dies right away.

all was fine before I swapped out the existing linkage because i had the wrong one on.

all is re-attached.
I have the gas pedal ok, the rod behind it comes through the firewall and ends up at the holder at the engine. another rod leaves the other end of the holder and goes straight up to the back of the carb.

I have a choke cable going to the back of the carb to the holder attaching to the block and screw the book shows. choke seems to work mechanically ok, but w/ no fuel.

I have a cable that looks like the choke cable at the dash. it comes through the firewall and ends up on the back top of the carb, on the same casing hook that holds the choke cable. it then goes straight down to the gas linkage cable and hooks to it. Note: I only have about an inch of play on my gas pedal.

so the issue is no gas pedal play, and no gas to clear gas filter bowl. this engine runs fine and has been tuned. just something going on wrong w/ my linkage I think. i am thinking I hjave something wrong at the carb with these connections.

no gas in the filter = no fuel pump action, regardless of pedal travel .... the 2nd cable that goes to the carb and then the linkage is the hand throttle, if it's not done right it could restrict linkage movement, there should be a "slip" connection so that regardless of where the hand cable is, the pedal can still control the linkage .... but check out that fuel pump, should fill the filter and carb pretty quick just on the starter

do I actually need a hand throttle? I will check the fuel pump, thanks. wouldnt of figured it would go belly up sitting at the painter for a couple weeks. so I have everything connected correctly?

no you don't need the hand throttle ... it sounds like ya got it right, keeping in mind there's adjustments possible the pedal doesn't move real far [you could have someone put it thru it's travel and watch the carb to see if it has full sweep] .... the fuel problem could be junk in the line, especially if the tank isn't new or renewed, have an inline filter on it? might also have been a poor diphragm in the pump, that decided to split, or could be a worn pump push rod that finally got to not pushing enough to pump anymore

Seconded. Don't worry about your cables right now, they are probably fine (or close), anyway. Your fuel pump isn't working or the lines are clogged somehow.

Is there gas in the tank? smile

My '54 will drain all the fuel back out of the lines if I don't start it every week. If I go too long, it usually takes 3-4 times of priming the carburetor with fuel to get it to run on it's own. I've been told that my pump has a bad valve inside, maybe yours is the same.

First off, is there fuel in the tank. add a few gallons and see what happens. Next you said that it was at the paint shop, what was painted, was the gas cap and or the fuel tank vent taped off, and you said you adjusted the pedal linkage, did you remove the carb and put a rag in the intake, is it still there.

Got it, had to pull gas lines until I found the clog, shot it out w/ air and were driving. I made the first driver ever in the truck today. were leakin a little oil, and it running way to rich I think, but it ran shifted and made it home. Its been over a year all apart to all together. its nice ot finally start and move it from the garage.
need to add the air cleaner on it, and figure out what screws to set to have it not idle so loud you cant hear yourself think.

A note on the throttle knob and cable to the carb, it was used for hand cranking the motor when cold. It set the idle speed higher for starting.

56 stepside,

Don't quote me on this, but I believe if you are the originator of the thread and you delete your first post, the thread will vanish.

Try it and see if it works!

the first post on a thread with any answers can't be deleted Stuart, except by the mod of that forum
