Hey guys,
I now have the cab off of my '48 and the frame(chassie) is covered in surface 60 year old dirt and scaley rust. I will be painting the frame with POR 15 Chassie black and was wondering....If I scrape the frame a little and then pressure wash the rest will that hurt anything for the POR 15? Anybody ever done this? Thanx in advance.

that will work just fine. I would recommend a wire brush cup on the angle grinder to remove most of the scale. If you have just surface rust, then there is little to do. However if you have structural degradation, then you will need to repair the rust prior to painting.

Make sure that you get any grease or oil off the surface, as it will prevent the Chassis Black from sticking properly. Otherwise, surface rust is fine, it won't hurt. Also, make sure the chassis is bone dry before you apply the finish.

i just spent about 3mo cleaning and wire brushing my 54 frame. the grease was bad in places. after a trip to the car wash i used a water based degreasser called B52 with a siphon gun hooked to the air compressor. i had to really work on a few spots, under steering column and around gear box. brake and clutch peddle assy. after cleaning and completely drying i sprayed it real good with Gem rust converter ans let it completely dry then i coated it with Eastwoods rust encapsulator and Eastwoods chassis black. i thinned the encapsulator and sprayed it and the chassis black. it comes ready to spray. i am very pleased with the outcome. good luck, cody

I found out already that the POR 15 will not stick to dirt and grease..........so I will pressure wash the frame and let it dry very well then start the brushing.

It wouldn't hurt to have the entire frame blasted. We had ours done then used a pressure washer and the POR-15 cleaner. Blasting would ensure that every speck of grease and rust was removed.

I did just what you are describing. I wire brushed the chassis with a high-speed angle grinder, sprayed on a good degreaser, power washed, and then painted with POR-15. I'm happy with the results I got. No doubt the results would be even better if you blast the frame, but, like everything else, it all depends on how much you want to spend. I chose to put my money into the important mechanical parts (engine and brakes), because I plan to drive my Bolt.

Sand Blast the thing or chem dip it. Like my grandpa use to say, "if it's worth doing it's worth doing right."

Good words to live by... as long as you have unlimited time and money. I doubt grandpa did, and I know I don't.

I would rather pay a few bucks to have it sandblasted then paint... rather than waste 45 dollars in a quart of POR 15 plus my time by painting without a clean surface and the paint not sticking.

Blasting gives a more durable surface. No argument. My point is, if you're on a budget, there are a hundred better places to spend your money.

many reasons to blast beyond the simple appearance most older trucks will have some rust on the frame rust is the enemy of all restorers you ignore it now and just cover it few years down the road when your frame comes apart or breaks due to you taking a short cut you'll be sorry that would like building a house and saying well its solid dirt we don't need any type of foundation

I too am on a tight budget but want to do it safe and right. What did folks do before blasting? (hand scrape and wirebrush)
Also I think the info on POR 15 said that the bare metal must have some type of primer to adhere to, well thats another 50$.
I can tell by that time by looking at the frame if there any cracks or problems that need to be repaired to fix it then.
I think i will scrape and brush as best as i can then hit the frame with a de-greaser and powerwash dry then PAINT.

What did I do before blasting? I removed everything except crossmembers and that was all I did. There is no reason to hand scrape and wire brush something that will be blasted.

No primer, just rust. POR 15 Information Sheet

Just my 2 pennies, but do you have access to a local Big Rig shop?....if you can have your frame steam cleaned it does a fantastic job on the old grease and grime, far better than a powerwasher, I had mine done for $40.
