Hello,
I picked up these PTO units yesterday. Does anyone know if any of these will work with a sm420?
http://www.fattiretrading.com/images/pto1.jpg

They all seem like they would bolt up, but some have the gear on the side, some in the center, and some have slanted gear teeth.

If I want it to power a winch, what should I look for?
Thanks,
Chris

Hy Mt. Tam Trucker, P.T.O.s are application specific, that is there are different gears to fit different transmissions. Some are single speed, some are two speed, some are reversable. Are there any ID tags on the ones you picked up? The mounting holes/pattern is an S.A.E. standard size, so one P.T.O. housing will fit any transmission, provided it has the correct gear installed for that transmission. You must shim the P.T.O. to the transmission when you install it, for proper gear backlash. they provide gaskets of different thicknesses for that purpose. Is there a truck tranny shop or power transmission shop in your area, or a truck wrecker that has been around for awhile, they should be able to help you get the correct gear for your P.T.O., or to identify the ones you already have, hope that helps.

The straight cut gears won't work the two with " slanted " teeth might if the pitch is correct. If you can't match model numbers compair the pitch of the teeth on the 420 and the PTOs. Also you will need a two way pto to run a winch.

Thanks everybody!
The two units with the slanted gears are Chelsea model 41CF assy C4 and Chelsea model 41CF assy C6. They both have different shape/size output shafts. I will check tomorrow if either works in both directions.

Both of your 41 series can be made to work with the proper input gear. You'll find a number on the side of it. It can be changed to the one you need if you don't have it. The c4 & C6 numbers indicate the assembly configuration, which indicated the position of the PTO on the transmission opening. The housings are reversible so the the output shaft can be in a high or low position in relation to the C/L of the case. There are dozens of input gears to fit most of the trannys of that period. (60-80's)when this model was made. The question will be if they still have one to fit the SM420 which had been replaced by the CH465 by that time.

If you wish to operate a mechanical winch then ttodd is correct in that you must have a forward/reverse PTO. They are pretty expensive if you must buy a new one. Also it needs to be a low % of engine speed as they will demand a lot of power and torque from the engine at idle.

my pto is a Tulsa 37C7KQR. This came with my truck 20 years ago.I have never used it as I had a clark 5spd and a detroit in there and it was difficult to try and route the shaft in there. it came with a 4,000 lb winch and shaft.

I did call Muncie Power who took over tulsa and talked to them and had to find another # which I did but have to call them .
I did get back to them with the gear nbr and they said that it was the one for a sm420 and they gave me the part nbr for a .200" steel shim required to space it out and where to get it locally (40 mi. away
