old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 8 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 8 | Hi all, I have found myself in the fortunate position of being the proud owner of what I think is a 46 flatbed 1.5 ton truck? It was part of the stuff you find on a farm when my family bought it a few years ago. The Stovebolt gallery has help me identify the model, I think? What I need to do is collect this beauty and tow it on a trailer 500km to my workshop ready for restoration. I am looking for some advice on an estimate on the weight of the truck as a rolling cab chassis and the wheel base too as I am hoping to transport it on a heavy duty car trailer. Could anyone help? Thanks, Craig Sydney, Australia
**I have several good photos if someone could give me some advice on how to post them?

Yes pictures will help. See the image posting policy link in the lower left corner of this page.
If your truck is a ton and a half it qualifies for the Big Bolts forum. I'm moving this over there so you can play with the big boys. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 | What's the number on the ID (VIN) plate. This will help identify it, as either a 1 1/2 ton, or 2 ton. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 8 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 8 | The local Australian distributor GM Holden compliance plate riveted to the fire wall has it as a model 2153? I have photos at http://s595.photobucket.com/albums/tt36/craigheadland/ I hope this link works and I would be keen to get some feedback. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 | Looking at your photos, it looks like you may have a Chevrolet "Maple Leaf". Looking at the photo that shows the side of the hood, it looks as if the "Maple Leaf" Emblems have been removed from above the side louvers. I have one of those "Maple Leaf" emblems, here on my desk, & it's the same shape as that area, on your hood, where the emblem would be. If it is a "Maple Leaf", it could be a 2 ton, 2 1/2 ton, or 3 ton truck. That No. "2153", I believe would be a Trim number for a Canadien/Holden built truck. Are there any other numbers. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 8 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 8 | The photos I have don't clearly indicate any more information on the model. Unfortunately the truck is a 6 hour drive away and I am hoping the next trip will be to pick it up. Any guess to the weight as is? I take your point as to the maple leaf as a lot of US model cars came to Australia out of Canadian production plants over the years. I would need a set of maple leaf emblems if this was the case, do you think this would be hard to find? Any guesses to the engine size. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2002 Posts: 221 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Aug 2002 Posts: 221 | Hi craigheadland!
Our friend, 'Woogeroo' ( fellow bolter on this forum) sent me a note to see if I had any information to offer. I think 'Spanky' is right--it has the louvres on the hood like Maple Leaf. I don't believe Canadian Maple Leafs were made as 2 tons. They were a heavier duty truck than Chevrolet and started at 2 1/2 ton rating. That's not to say that trucks made for Holden weren't 2 tons. If it is a 2 ton, the engine would be the 235 cu. in. (same for 2 1/2 and 3ton) From the photos it looks like a wheelbase of 160 inches. The data I have shows the cab and chassis 'curb' weight of 4640lbs. Shipping weight (minus fuel, oil and spare tire) as 4430lbs. I hope this info is of some use to you. I'm sure you'll be able to get more information from all the great people who hang out here. Best wishes on your restoration. P.S Information using a VIN number might be available from GM Canada's Vintage Dept. at: 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario L1H 8P7 Canada. George

"Craighead g'day mate,
Zacca here she's a big bird, it's a US built truck, unusual, because most of our trucks down here are Canadian sourced. Could have came over here in early 1942 with aircraft and stuff that was supposed to go the US Army in the Philippines, but the troop reinforcements and cargo fleet were diverted to Australia when Bataan and Corregidor fell to the Japanese and Gen Macarthur came to Australia. Holdens probably did the conversion to right hand drive. I know its US built because of the cab, beltline around the back, US doors, US knobs and winders and the wind-out windshield with the handle on the dash. Canadian trucks had none of these. I really think to forget about a car trailer, you'l find you will be too long and attract a fair deal of attention and besides, the steel in that ole truck is HEAVY. Better to find somebody with a flatbed truck and put the whole thing on the back for the journey. Welcome to the Downunder Stovebolt fraternity mate. Zacca

I think I was heading to that logical conclusion about transport too. I am gunna line up a tilt tray or a low loader on backfreight to save $. can you put me in touch with any other natives who have a similar truck. I would love to see something in the more finished stages and find sources for some of the parts I will need.

Just make sure it is in fact HD so the axels are rated for the load. It is basically like towing an extra cab chevrolet full sized pickup, size and weight. I don't think you will have any problems. I have towed 3 home that way with no issues. One on a smaller car trailer. | | |
