I seem to recall that some where in the mid 80's, some chevrolet trucks came with a 3 speed (with overdrive) transmission. Is anybody familiar with this setup? Also, what motors would hook up to these transmissions? I am thinking this might be an option for a 49 1/2 ton truck.

There is a 4 speed fourth being an OD, it's a New Process A833. Should bolt up to Chevy or Mopar motor. Here's a link to a long thread on Inliners that shouls answer any queston you have.
