I replaced my sending unit and gas gauge both brand new. They test fine however the gas gauge with 3/4 of a tank of gas only reads 1/4 full. Do these gauges when new have to be calibrated. or is it a bad gauge?

check it right full, and then [carrying a gas can with ya] go until it runs out to see where the gauge is - then bend the float arm until you get a close match to reality - that's about as "calibrated" as these ol things get

BEND THE FLOAT ARM? Ok I will try anything.

Just filled mine,electric in tank pump went out,replaced with new,complete unit,now it read's a quarter tank less.So on empty I still have a way's to go before running out! No problem!!lol

NOT so much as bent the float arm
depending on what type sender you refer to, the float may be placed backwards. in other words if you have one where you adjust the heigth and length w/ a set screw,,,,,, you may simply reverse the float rod.
you can probably check it outside the tank first.
make sure your tank ground is solid.

Bill is right. The floats have to be adjusted. Just be carefull that you bend only the rod that holds the float. Also, to make the gauge read more, bend the float down. These are mass produced and i don't think there is any calibration used. Cecil......
