The passenger side of the trans has the cast in mounts for the parking brake, but the drivers side has a mickey mouse welded to the bell housing bracket for mounting the brake/clutch assembly. I'd like to tidy up and get it back - or closer to original. Does anyone have a picture or illustration of how this originally went together. Has anyone dealt with this before? Was the assembly originally bolted to both the bellhousing and the trans? I was thinking about fabricating some brackets and/or finding an older bell housing. Any thoughts would be appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,972 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,972 | Have not dealt with this, but maybe this page from the 42-47 Chevy Shop Manual will help. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1942_47/4247csm657.htmI don't know if GMC's are different. Hopefully someone with hands-on will respond.

The original 4 speed transmission would have been spur gears with no synchronizers and it was common practice to install a later transmission and clutch housing. The stud on which the the clutch and brake pivots is pressed in. If there was welding, something probably broke. The drilling on the passenger side of the transmission is for a parking brake if you have an open drive shaft such as is used in larger trucks. If you still have the closed drive shaft, a parking brake behind the transmission will not work. GMC and Chev are the same. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 224 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 224 | whoever did my 46 back in the day bolted a bar to the frame that holds the pedals in their original location it works so well i left it alone. mine is a 46 with 235 and sm420 pm me if you want some pics and i will get you one. phil | | |
