I have replaced the wheel, carrier and pinion bearings in the 68 3/4 ton chunk I put into my 1 ton rear (5.14 to 4.11).
I replaced these bearings because of a rumble coming from the rear. Changing the bearings cured the rumble but let me hear a terrible whinning from the rear. VERY annoying!
The ring gear and pinion gear are pitted and rough and I guess I will replace them both as the shop manual says the noise can come from rough or pitted gears.
Question: Can anyone advise where I can find a 4.10 ring and pinion set for a 68 chunk? Any of our sponsers?
How hard is it to change the gears relative to replacing pistons for example? Thanks

Swapping the gears is a lot tougher than building a stock 6. You need to take a close look at the shop manual. If you have and know how to use a set of dial indicators you should be able to do it. If not, find someone to help.

Last time I checked some of the vendors carried the 4.10 gears. I would avoid Houser like the plague, he doesn't know much about these trucks. Randy\'s Ring & Pinion also makes a set of 3.90 gears.

Not sure but you could try Patricks. There is even a story somewhere here about installing one of thier kits but you would have to search for it.

Replacing those gears requires patience, attention to detail and a little skill. Read and understand the procedure in the shop manual before you begin. As Fred says, you will need a couple of special tools, don't try to "ballpark" anything..

Machinist's bluing will let you easily check the contact pattern and if that is good it will last a long long time even if it ' sings ' .

I usually drop a small rare earth magnet in the bottom of the axle housing to catch any wear particles .

Keep it full of clean 90W hypoid gear oil & change annually etc.
