What is involved in shortening the bed, is there a lot of bodywork and welding?

needs to be cut both front and back of wheel well, so yes and yes

Trucks did that a while back on a '66, cut the frame down too. Lots of work, and as red said, it needs to be cut both in front of and behind the wheelwell. I don't recall the exact dimensions.

Yes the Trucks show on the Powerblock on the Spike channel had a few good episodes on their '66 C10 build. They started with a long bed and made a shortbed out of it.

I can't remember the exact episode that they did the shortening but if you could find it, it would answer most all of your questions
