I converted to 12 volts over the winter, everthing went pretty good, until I started her up. Starter now grinds, not everytime but maybe grind 3 times then turn key and starts. Winter before last the starter ws rebuilt and a new gear was installed, not one grind until 12volts. Is the 12 volt firing the startergear out too fast and just mashing into ring gear? I took it apart and cleaned up both gears with a dremel- there were burrs seemed to help but didn't cure it. | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | You need a new starter drive on the front of the starter. It has a one way clutch & is slipping internally. Get a new one. The rebuilts are not good.

Do you have a 12v flywheel or a 6v flywheel?

Then realized my 6volt starter gears wouldn't work withthe flywheel. So at the time, not knowing any better I had the local auto electric guy modify my starter to install apropriate gear, i now know I could have just used a matching flywheel and starter. Anyway it is a 6volt starter with 12volt gear and 12volt flywheel, the same setup worked all last year-flawlessly,until the 12volt conversion. | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 41 New Guy | New Guy Joined: May 2009 Posts: 41 | The reason I switched from original flywheel is that it was a powerglide | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 41 New Guy | New Guy Joined: May 2009 Posts: 41 | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 | Did you say you had matched the starter gear ratio to the # teeth on the flywheel ? Sounds like it does not engage correctly. Could be the " clutch " on the old starter is not working right. | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 41 New Guy | New Guy Joined: May 2009 Posts: 41 | after cleaning up both gears with a dremel it works probably80% of the time I think I'll take my time and clean them really well and see how it behaves. | | |
