I think I have a factory installed sway bar up front? Also, in the rear, I have springs over the rear axle (looks like helper springs) as well as the typical ones under the axle. Does anybody put the helper springs back in the rear? Is this factory? I guess I need to poke through my assembly manual tonight when I get home. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | the sway bar was standard on panels and burbs all years, the auxilary spring pack was an option to increase GVW rating from 4000# with base 15" wheels to 4600# with the 16's - up to you if you want them, they won't make any difference to the ride unless the truck is heavily loaded

An optional 10-leaf Heavy Duty Rear Spring set was available in 1954 (but is not listed in 1949). In 1954, the 10-leaf set was an RPO for the 8-leaf spring set that was standard from 47-55. 16" wheels were standard in all A-D years on Suburbans (15" wheels were optional).
The "anti-sway" bar (a better name) was called a "stabilizer" by GM and was standard on the Suburban and the 1/2 ton Panel (the stabilizer might not have been installed on the 1-ton panel, however). The style of this assembly changed in 1951. Jim Carter sells both styles of bushing sets.
Of course, someone might have installed helper springs.

What an interesting option though! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 1,132 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 1,132 | My 49 has the sway bar.
