I need parts to rebuild my starter and I would like to identify the year of my motor. The number stamped on the flat right behind the distributor is F0523B.

This is exactly what I was looking for to ID my 52 216 that I took out of a car.
The only thing I do not understand is following the last 4 digits which designated the sequence number from assembly there is a letter and number. What is that? Does anyone know?

I just double checked the book, and it does list a B code engine up to at least '60 (my book doesn't go past '60 for passenger engines), so checking the date code near the starter might be in order. The B code comes up the same for all years, 235 W/Powerglide.

But, a combination of casting-date codes, block and head casting codes, and engine serial numbers are the best way to make an identification. Does anyone know if 216 head and block codes are in the same locations as these codes found on later 235 and 261 engines? If anyone is willing/able to send me photos of all the 216 codes, I be please to give them credit in a web-page that displays photos of all the 216 codes. A photo of both sides of the block would also be helpful - the oil distributor cover/plate on the manifold side of the block, in particular. Thanks, Tim | | |
