old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 141 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 141 | I just bought a new old tank for my flatbed, and I have been thinking about how to set up a 2nd tank. My original tank leaks at the filler tube flange, so instead of repairing it, I bought another that appears to be in good shape.
So my idea is to take my old tank, remove the filler tube, solder on a patch to seal the hole, then mount the filler on the opposite corner so that I can mount it under the bed on the driver side.
Please, I don't want to get into a discussion about the dangers of welding a gas tank here.
Has anyone done this, or seen it?
Does anyone have any other 2nd tank ideas that would work well on my truck?
I like my idea for three reasons: 1. I already have a tank to modify, I just need the straps. 2. It will look very original. 3. I can leave the original tank full, and primarily use the new tank on the driver side. This way, I won't have to walk around the truck every time I go to fill up at the station.
I had been thinking of building a tool box to go in the same location, so I would lose that option. I do need under-bed tool storage. Thanks, chris ioakimedes | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,988 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,988 | If you do go with the dual tanks, be sure to use from both of them, at least occasionally. With the crummy gas these days, a number of us have learned the hard way what can happen if gas gets too old and you run it into your engine. So be sure to keep it fairly fresh. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 93 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 93 | My truck has a homemade tank on it that mounts between the frame rails underneath the dump bed. I plan on installing a second on the outside of the frame, I'm going to get a old beer keg and make a tank out of it. I don't drink but a buddy of mine is going to give me one for return fee cost of $30. All and the under-bed tool box idea is awesome. I mounted a 50inch long box under my bed and it looks and works sweet. Best part is the box cost me $2 at best. IT came out of my brothers old utility bed. HE was going to scrap it so I decided to cut the middle box out with the angle grinder and mount it on my truck. Hillbilly I know, but I did a good job of it and it looks sharp. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | That's not hillbilly 47farmer, that's green man.....or as we used to say, "recycling". | | |
