I've been looking for a 261 for a couple of months. The prices seem to range from free(not running, sitting in someones back yard, and definately not garanteed) to 1k(low miles, in the truck and running) Locally, a good block and a set of rods recently sold for $650. Good luck!

It's a geographic thing to a certain degree. I would think that $650.00 would be plenty to have to pay for one . . . I believe I would try to see if $400.00 would get it.

I paid $300 for a complete engine only. I paid to have the head magnafluxed $20.00 = $320 total about a year ago. No starter, no bellhousing, flywheel or clutch, no carburetor. Engine needed rebuilding. Getting harder to find everyday.

I bought an canadian 261 out of an Pontiac with an 848 head in an Ebay auction for 1 Euro grin

No crank, valvecover, bellhousing - but who cares. grin grin

And it was not only here in Germany, it was even in my hometown. grin grin grin

But this was sheerunbeliveableonceinalfetime luck.

Ususaly they go for $600 to $900 in a decent condition and not totaly shot.

I paid $300 for a good newer 230 and $300 for a good running 292. So he might go for it.

This one is so COMPLETE it's scary. It even has the oil filter mounted on the intake with the lines connected, starter bell housing, clutch, pressure plate, BIG TRANS, pulleys, belts, on and on and on and on. I will talk to him today and see if I can snag it.

Thanks for your input!
