For helping keep this great

on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 22 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 22 | Hello,
I ended up with a 261. So like a good boy I went a lookin and read tons of articles and ordered a Langdon's Stovebolt Catalog. But I have a few questions.
1st I read here that I need a adapter plate to move the water pump up. What is up with that, that wasn't in any articles I read. Where does one get these adaptor plates if I need one.
2nd what's the most I could shave off a 848 235 head before I run into clearance issues and what could I expect for compression ratio if I shave the head that much.
Thanks for putting up with me. I tried to search but my internet is going in and out and the computer won't let me do what I want.

If he doesn't respond, pm or email him. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 360 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 360 | moving the water pump w/ an adaptor plate puts the fan and pump back in the original position in the engine compartment where it would have been w/ a 216 or 235. this aligns it w/ the radiator and is supposed to improve cooling by drawing the air through the radiator the way it was designed to flow. a member here, pre 68 dave makes them and has them avaiable on ebay (pre68dave). very nice as i have 1 and am waiting to get my 261 going. as for shaving the head i will look for the article i have that describes clearance issues w/ the valves at a certain milling. sorry cant find it right now but will look later.

I saw another butchered rad saddle on the weekend at a car show. It was obviously modified to move the rad forward. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 | Where does one get these adaptor plates if I need one. You can get the adapter here from a stovebolter who came up with it: Adapter plate This article has some headwork comparisons as well as other valuable info for a 261 build: http://www.selectric.org/55chevy/soup.htmlHave fun and happy birthday Truckernix.

Right now I have a 1958 Chevy truck 235 that the P.O. installed in the pickup and I can really see how much lower the fan sits I always thought it was a little wierd how low the fan and pump was compared to the radiator. Looks like I'm going to add that adapter plate to my list of things needed just to be safe, I haven't ran into any over heating issues yet but I hate to find out the bigger motor likes cooler water the hard way.
Thank you guys for clearing this up and thank you for that article Curt B. (kind of wierd saying that my Dads name is Curt Same spelling even) I haven't read that one before and it was very informitive. I saved all of he pictures of the article on my computer that is pretty much the direction I am going with this motor.
Thanks Again Josh S.
Also Happy Birthday Truckernix.
