Question 1} how to tell the difference between a generator and an alternator?
2} What are the steps for switching to an alternator?
On yesterday's test run, I found that I am not making enough juice to run the large inverter I installed. This inverter is intended to run a small electric refrigerator and 5000btu AC unit during travel. I don't have any experience with an inverter so I can't comment.

After further inspection, it looks like it has an alternator, obviously underpowered. I am thinking an HO alternator, battery isolator and 2nd battery may do the trick.
The temptation to simply run the portable generator is strong. all I have to do is move an AC inlet to the rear bumper deck. Certainly cheaper! | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | yes I have, and investigated all the alternatives, which is why I'm going with a top line DC only marine fridge  no point in wasting money buying constant frustration ....but in your case, a propane/110 fridge could easily be found used very reasonable here's a bit about bigger alternators [biggest you could use], but a 2nd battery will just add to the load, even if you use deep cycles .... | | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 117 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2009 Posts: 117 | my rv has a regular alternator and 2 batteries with a isolator the engine battery only runs the engine part and the coach battery runs my fridge, tv, microwave, pc, etc ,etc with no problems if the battery for the coach gets drained the isolator keeps power from being drained from the engine battery. in turn only the battery that needs charging at the time gets charged by the alternator breaking up the load so to speak also, my ac to dc converter also has a charger built into it so it charges the coach battery when were plugged into shore power. how ever our fridge only runs for a breif time to cool the food store and then stays closed and cold untill hooked to shore power. for long drives the fridge thermostat kicks it back on when it needs to cool. hope that helps
