(YES!!!) the thing is that it looks like its been dropped tailshaft first into 3 feet of mud. everything is covered in crusty oil soaked mud. how would u guys go about cleaning it so its ready for paint?
p.s. all the gears turn wonderfully, so i really dont want to have to break into it if i dont have to.

Get out all of the old crap from sitting in the junkyard & if some water gets in while cleaning you'll get that out too. Should be no problem.

The higher the temperature of the transmission and the water, the easier the gunk will come off.

Takes a while and ends up being like an archelogical dig! Then a bit of carb or disc cleaner (disc is less nasty than carb) to get the final spoo off.

As long as you have a driveline yoke in the tailshaft housing and go kind of easy around anyplace a shaft goes into or out of the gearbox,it'll be okay. You can even wax it so it won't grow any more rust for a while.
