Just the camshaft and the timing gear remain. I don't see any obvious way to remove it without damage. Although I have rebuilt boat motors and small engines I am just learning about auto engines. Are the lifters the cup shaped pieces that the push rods set in and the cams push? I have removed the rods already. It's not uncommon for them to get slightly cup-shaped on the bottom and be hard to pull through the bores they ride in. Pull them up as far as they can go and the cam should slide out underneath them after removing the screws from the thrust plate. Then drive them out from the bottom side using a hammer and punch. A cupped lifter is junk and should not be re-used. Ditto for the cam they're riding on! New lifters have a slight convex shapr on the surface that rides the cam so the lifter rotates. Jerry

Yes, the things the pushrods rest in are called valve lifters. They need to be removed or at the very least pulled up so the cam lobes can slither by as you pull the camshaft out. The fuel pump actuation arm is also resting on a cam lobe and it (the fuel pump) needs to be taken completely off the engine. The cam will not just pull straight out, it must be turned, supported and gently coaxed as it comes through its bearings.
