The reason I ask is my manual says the original size tire for a 65 C10 is a 7.10-15, which is 28.8 inches in diameter. if I put a tire that is 28.8 inches in diameter in the fender mount spare tire carrier it rubs the back of the cab?
So I was wondering what other guys are using for the spare.
Thanks guys,

The tire you are talking about is for the 3/4 ton models. I may be out in left field with this, but come morning I'll go out to the shop and look in my service manual and see just to make sure. After I've checked on those figures I'll get back to you. Looks like a 215 70 R15 is about 27" in diameter. How much clearance is there between the tire and the back of the cab?

I must have the wrong fender on my truck? Duke and Ken1960 have over 3" of clearance between the cab and the fender mount spare tire. I have zero clearance with the stock 670-15 tire? I bought the fenders I am using at a local swap meet here in Colorado, they are not original to my truck.
Were there different styles of stepside bed fenders with the spare tire cutouts? I have ordered a 640-15 tire as a spare, so it should have a 1/2" clearance, but I am confused as to why there is a difference.
I have pictures of the truck in the link below.
Thanks,
John

I got a fender from someone recently and he had a shortbed. It has the hole cut out of it in the part where the tire sits like your picture. But the original fender I had when I brought the truck home didn't have it, and I know it was the original as my grandparents bought it new in 64' and I'm the 2nd owner. It may not be the difeerence in fenders as much as where it is located due to the bed size. Your's looks longer by a few inches. You might have a newer truck frame under your sheetmetal. The bed also seems to be extremely close to the cab. But that just may be the picture. There should be at least 1" between the 2. A workaround might be to simply remount the fenders to the rear by several inches. Take a peek at this stepside from the gallery and compare the wheel locations relative to the fenders. http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery/images/clark_bob_1961d.jpgYour bed may have been remounted too far forward. Have fun. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 1,262 | I am inclined to agree with Tramp. I think there are different fenders for stepsides, long bed vs. short bed. My fender does not have the hole for the tire support rod. Which makes me think this fender is for a long bed. Perhaps that is also why the tires appear in a different location relative to the rear fenders?
K10, It is not possible to move the fenders back on a shortbed. From the factory they are already only a little bit away from the rear stake pockets. I checked the wheelbase, it is 115". Bed is 1-1/4" from cab. Frame is correct, I have checked the numbers stamped on it and it does not have any welds where anything has been cut and reworked.
No worries, I ended up buying a 640-15 Firestone tire from Coker. It fits quite nicely with about a 1/2". I have posted some pictures on my webshots link below.
Thanks for all the input.

Take a look at Jeff Botts 1960 vs. my 1965 in my webshots link below.
Jeff's spare sits much higher because the spare tire fender cut out only comes down to about the same height as the wheel opening in the fender. But the spare sits back into the fender past the spare tire c/l
On the fender I have the spare tire fender cut out goes down below the wheel opening in the fender. But the spare doesn't sit back into the fender to the spare tire c/l.
I am betting they changed this for better visibility and to make it easier to lift the spare up onto the mount. Guess that explains why some spares have 3 inches of clearance to the cab and others don't?
