Giving him as much leeway as I can --
Maybe it's a GMC 302 bored .080.
That would make a 314.

I'm going to see it at the Lonestar Roundup again today. I'll get the story.(and a few pics under the hood won't hurt either, eh?)

I never met up with the owner, but I managed to get a few more pictures.
I am guessing it either has IFS off a car, or a 1/2 ton front axle With 8 lugs on the rear, and 6 lugs on the front wheels.
The engine was unfamiliar to be by sight, but maybe the pics will help identify it. Driver's side view Passenger side view

Doesn't the engine in your '48 look almost identical?? I'll guess the mystery 315 is actually a 235 ci engine.

I meant that the oil filler cap is in the middle of the valve cover, where mine are both on the front of the valve cover.

I know what a stovebolt 6 looks like , but I was unfamiliar with the oil filler cap location and air cleaner design.

That filler cap location (center of the valve cover) was used on some 235s (and 261s, supposedly) in the late 50s - car and truck 235s.

Those aren't all from Tejas(tay-haas) - there were cars from as far West as California and (at least)as far East as Indiana. It was cool to watch 'em start up, hit the air bags, lift off the ground, and roll away. My favorite car there was The Mistress - check out the next 8-9 pics. That fella drove her 100 miles from San Antonio with no backrest. Die Hard folks there. (sorry - I got off topic)

Does anyone recognize the air cleaner on the "undiscovered engine," and any other theories as to the 315 CID?

Theory - the 315 is a mistake or a mistype.

It might be an automobile air cleaner that was used for several years (1508 is a sedan delivery - it has a passenger car's engine compartment.

I have seen the rocker cover with the oil filler in the middle on '59 trucks for sure, maybe '58, too.

My 261 (58-60 Pontiac) has the breather cap in the center.

Maybe your 261 is a 315, then....

55 or later 235 or 261 - notice the low water pump.

The one I like the best is the Eastside Rat Rod Garage truck. I think that is cool.

Nate, The 194-230-250-292 series engines have the distributor near the front and the older 216-235-261 engines have it in the middle. I think the air cleaner you noticed is the oil bath type, used in lots of HD applications.
